The right chair mat depends first on what's underneath it. Hard floors need a mat with a smooth or grippy backing that won't slide; carpet needs cleats or spikes that anchor into the pile. Some rigid mats, in glass or thick polycarbonate, are listed for both.
After that, the choice is about material and size. Thin PVC is inexpensive; polycarbonate and tempered glass cost more, carry stated load ratings of 1,000 lb or more, and don't curl. Size matters if you move around the desk a lot.
