Three monitors from one laptop is where docks differ most. Most laptops can't drive three external displays natively over one cable, so docks use one of three routes: DisplayLink software (WAVLINK, Plugable UD-ULTCDL, Anker DL7400), native MST on Windows Thunderbolt laptops (Dell SD25TB4), or two dock displays plus one from the laptop's own port.
DisplayLink works with many laptops, including Macs, but needs a driver and adds processor load. Native routes avoid that but depend on your laptop and, on Mac, often won't reach three.
Resolution matters too: some triple docks run one display at 4K 30Hz and two at 1080p. Our comparison is based on published specifications, not hands-on testing.
